TRUSTEES

 

John (Jack) H. Clymer, Chair of the Board, became a trustee in 1972.  He is a partner in the Boston office of the law firm of Nixon Peabody LLP, where he is member of the Private Clients Group, having been a shareholder of the firm of Hutchins, Wheeler & Dittmar prior to its February 1, 2003 merger with Nixon Peabody.  His practice is concentrated in the areas of estate planning, trust administration, representation of nonprofit organizations (including foundations) and personal counseling to owners and managers of small businesses.  Jack is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School.  He serves on the Foundation's Human Resources and Investment/Finance Committees.  He also serves on the boards of the Anatolia College and Sofia American Schools, Inc. and is a former board member of Associated Grant Makers, Inc. and Family Service Association of Greater Boston.  Jack has been active in his hometown of Concord, Massachusetts, serving in a number of capacities, including two terms as Selectman.

Roslyn M. Watson, Treasurer of the board, became a trustee in 1981.  She is President of Watson Ventures, a company that invests in commercial and residential real estate projects in the United States and France and provides real estate counsel to American investors seeking French real estate opportunities.  Her prior positions include serving as Vice President at the Gunwyn Company in Cambridge and Project Manager for the development of Commonwealth Pier for the Massachusetts Port Authority.  Ros chairs the Foundation’s Investment/Finance Committee.  She is a graduate of Simmons College and has a Master of Science in Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management where she was an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow.  She is a trustee of the National Osteoporosis Foundation in Washington, D.C., Director of American Express Centurion Bank where she chairs the Audit Committee, and trustee of the Dreyfus/Laurel Mutual Funds.  Ros chair's the Foundation’s Investment/Finance Committee.

Barbara E. Casey, Clerk of the board, became a trustee in 1994.  She is Managing Director, Wealth Management, at Mellon in Boston.  She has held a variety of executive positions with Schwab, WorldClinic, Fidelity Investments Premium Assets Group, Dreyfus Retirement Services, Mellon Trust, Boston Safe Deposit and Trust Company and John Hancock Financial Services.  Barbara is a graduate of Wellesley College and has a Masters in Business Administration from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Business Administration.  She also serves on the Business Leadership Council of Wellesley College and The Boston Foundation’s Cultural Task Force.  Barbara chair’s the Foundation’s Human Resource Committee.

Meizhu Lui, Vice Chair of the board, became a trustee in 1995.  She is the former Executive Director of United for a Fair Economy, a national non-profit that raises public awareness and activism on the dangers of growing economic inequality.  She previously coordinated the Boston Health Access Project at Health Care for All.  Most of her work has been as a labor activist.  She was a hospital food service worker for many years at Boston City Hospital.  She organized her fellow workers to fight for greater respect and power, and for gender and racial equality; she was elected President of AFSCME Local 1489 at Boston City Hospital.  She is a member of Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy (AAPIP), and previously served on the board of Associated Grant Makers, Inc.  Meizhu chair's on the Foundation’s Program Committee. 

Edward M. Swan, Jr., CFA became a trustee in 2001.  He is President of the FIS Group in Philadelphia, an institutional investment consultant and $1.4 billion fund of fund manager.  He served as a Visiting Faculty Member, Florida A&M University School of  Business & Industry (MBA Program). He has had a 28-year career in asset management with MFS Institutional Advisors, Franklin Management Corp, UBS Asset Management, Mitchell Hutchins Asset Management, WR Lazard & Co, and Prudential Insurance Company.  He is a graduate of Tufts University with a M.B.A. from the Wharton School and has taken courses in furniture making at North Bennett Street School.  Ed serves on the Foundation’s Investment/Finance Committee. 

Iris Gomez, Assistant Clerk of the Board, became a trustee in 2005.  She currently serves as an attorney at Massachusetts Law Reform Institute, a statewide legal services support center.  Iris has helped immigrants gain access to benefits and legal status, worked to change policies at the state and federal levels that keep immigrants in poverty, and advocated for systemic reforms that achieve social justice for immigrants.  She also provides training and technical assistance to other attorneys, advocates and the public; coordinates statewide advocacy activities; and provides consultation to local nonprofits in the areas of strategy development and fundraising.  Previously Iris was a senior attorney at Greater Boston Legal Services where she directed the organization’s immigrant work.  She is a graduate of Boston University School of Law and has taught an immigration law course there for many years.  Iris serves on the board of the National Immigration Law Center and was appointed its board chair in 2002, and she is also a published poet.  Iris serves of the Foundation’s Human Resources Committee.

Long Nguyen became a trustee in 2005.  He is a successful social entrepreneur with a special interest in serving Vietnamese refugees and is currently an independent consultant for national and local nonprofit organizations located around the country.  His work is focused in the areas of micro-enterprise and community building, and his consulting assignments involve strategic planning, program and resource development, and the provision of general management and technical assistance services.  His prior positions included Executive Director of Viet-AID, a community development corporation in Dorchester, staff attorney in Greater Boston Legal Services’ Asian Outreach Program, and Executive Director of the Vietnamese American Civic Association in Boston.  Long is a graduate of Boston University School of Law and has served on the board of Dorchester House Health Center since 2003.  He serves on the Foundation’s Program Committee.

John Hoang Sarvey became a trustee in 2005.  He is Vice President for Service at City Year and is responsible for the development of the organization's service strategy and program design.  Other national City Year positions John has held are Director of the National Corps, Alumni Director and Deputy Director to the Vice President of Education and Training; and Executive Director of City Year in San Jose, California.  Earlier, John was Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer of the Campus Outreach Opportunity League, a national organization that promotes and supports college student involvement in community service.  John is a graduate of  the University of California, Los Angeles, and has served on numerous boards including Asian Americans for Community Involvement, a comprehensive social service agency in San Jose, California.  John currently is chair of the Boston Chapter of the Coro Alumni Association and serves on the Boston Volunteer Literacy Collaborative.  He serves on the Foundation’s Program Committee.

Adam D. Seitchik became a trustee in 2006.  He is Chief Investment Officer and Executive Vice President at Trillium Asset Management in Boston where he chairs the asset allocation committee and is involved in portfolio management and equity research.  Adam’s prior positions include serving as Chief Global Strategist and Managing Director for Deutsche Asset Management in London and as Global Balanced Portfolio Manager, Associate Partner at Wellington Management Company in Boston and in a variety of executive positions at John Hancock Financial Services.  Adam also has taught economics at Wellesley College and worked as a consultant at Abt Associates.  Adam is a graduate of University of Texas, received his Ph.D. in Economics from Boston University and is a Chartered Financial Analyst.  Adam lives in Lexington and currently serves on the Lexington High School Council.  He serves on the Foundation’s Investment/Finance Committee

Karen L. Mapp became a trustee in 2006.  She is a Lecturer on Education at Harvard Graduate School of Education and is on the faculty of the Boston Principal Fellows Program and the Boston Teacher Residency Program.  Karen previously served as the Deputy Superintendent for Family and Community Engagement in the Boston Public Schools, as President of the Institute for Responsive Education and in various teaching and administrative positions at Northeastern University, Harvard University, Wellesley College and Trinity College.  She is a graduate of Trinity College and has Master’s degrees from Southern Connecticut State University and Harvard University and an Ed.D. in Administration, Planning and Social Policy from Harvard.  Karen serves on the boards of the Center for Collaborative Education and the Orchard Gardens K-8 Pilot School and co-chairs Boston’s Campaign for Proficiency.  Karen lives in Roxbury and serves on the Foundation’s Program Committee.
 

Martella Wilson-Taylor became a trustee in 2006.  She is the recent past President and CEO of the YWCA Boston.  Under Marti’s sixteen years of leadership, the YWCA completed a major renovation of its headquarters building and founded the YWCA’s Academy of Women Achievers, among other accomplishments.  Marti also served on the board of the National YWCA.  Prior to joining the YWCA, Marti was a principal in the organizational development consulting firm, Wilson Taylor Associates and served as President of Transitional Employment Enterprises, Inc.  Marti currently serves on the boards of South Africa Partners, Pine Manor College, the Cloud Foundation and the Massachusetts Health Council.  She is a graduate of Cheyney State College in Pennsylvania and has a Master’s in Developmental Psychology from San Francisco State University.  Marti lives in Brighton and serves on the Foundation’s Human Resources Committee.
